Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to include boundary conditions in the spatially interconnected system model and design stability analysis and synthesis conditions for distributed controllers. Applying the decomposition approach for spatially interconnected systems driven by a class of partial differential equations, the global finite extent system is decomposed into modal subsystems, which are used for stability analysis conditions and controller synthesis. The performance of the resulting suboptimal distributed controller is compared to controllers designed by other techniques, namely distributed controller synthesis for spatially invariant systems and optimal controller synthesis for the global system. Although the suboptimal controllers are synthesized by a small scale condition, they exhibit similar performance to the optimal controllers, indicating that the decomposition method can be a valid synthesis alternative.
