Abstract

Limited bandwidth is known to be a crucial obstacle in Remote Tower environments. In order to provide a cost-efficient system, stakeholders found different solutions by adapting their implementation of Remote Tower concepts to their requirements. Therefore we designed a study to measure the effects of low FR on performance, physiological stress and perceived quality and operability. 7 air traffic controllers (experimental group) and 5 pseudo-air traffic controllers (control group) are invited to assist a video of real air traffic recorded at Brunswick-Wolfsburg Airport at the Remote Tower field test platform at the German Aerospace Center Brunswick. In a passive shadow mode, they execute air traffic control relevant tasks in four different frame rate conditions (2 fps, 5 fps, 10 fps & 15 fps). After each video session (1h20), the participants are asked to evaluate their current physiological state, as well as the perceived quality of the video. They are also asked to indicate to which extent they judge the system at low frame rate and at the given image resolution as being operable. Results show that by reducing FR, performance doesn’t drop significantly and physiological stress doesn’t increase significantly. Only the perceived quality of the video and the perceived system operability drops significantly by reducing FR. Regarding to the descriptive statistics, it seems that a system with medium image resolution at 2 fps is judged lower in terms of quality and less operable than a system tested at 5 fps, 10 fps and 15 fps.
