SUMO and the German Handbook for the Dimensioning of Highways (HBS)

This work presents a comparison of the micro-simulation tool SUMO with one scenario taken from a the German version of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) [1], the Handbook for the Dimensioning of Highways (HBS) [2]. The HBS defines fundamental diagrams for a number of freeway scenarios which are used in the planning process of Germany's roads. Although the fundamental diagrams in this manual are a kind of average description, it is interesting to know how well they can be approximated by SUMO.
