Abstract

The thesis at hand aims at contributing to and improving the quality assurance of the production process for spar caps of rotor blades of wind turbines. During the manufacturing of the test subjects required to achieve this goal, an open-mould process with one-sided heating is utilized. The deformation of the test objects produced with this process is related to the inhomogeneous curing of the resin. Fibre-bragg-grating sensors are furthermore employed to observe the intralaminar strain during the production process. When exposing a test object to a steady temperature gradient during manufacturing, a deformation contrary to this temperature gradient can be observed. During another experiment performed at a higher temperature, a curvature in the direction of the mould is noticed. Simultaneously with these experiments, a simulation of the curing process of a 2-dimensional cross-section of the test objects is developed. This curing process of the utilized thermoset material is modelled according to a phenomenological model of Kamal and Sourour. The data resulting from this simulation and the experiments are compared and the simulation is successfully validated.
