Kurzfassung
This paper evaluates the potential of hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) for heavy railways. A HESS describes the combination of at least two different types of energy storage with diverging characteristics in an integrated energy storage system. Thus, several advantages (e.g. compact design, longer lifetime and higher efficiency) can be achieved, compared to single type energy storage. In the first part of the paper, the demand for electrical energy storage systems in railway applications is highlighted and the general characteristics of hybrid energy storage systems are discussed. Then the potential of a HESS is analysed, using the Next Generation Train feeder train concept “NGT LINK” as an application example. Finally, the boundary conditions for a reasonable usage of a HESS are derived, considering different load profiles.
