Abstract

An approach towards the identification of flow structures related to the aeroacoustic source mechanism in turbulent flows is presented. The new methodology is based on an analysis of the generalized intensity which is obtained considering an acoustic analogy and the existence of an energy conservation principle. The intensity distribution in the flow-field is derived from the correlation matrix, resulting from velocity fluctuations in the flow field captured via particle image velocimetry (PIV) and from the pressure field in the acoustic far-field. The approach is applied to two flow cases, namely a cylinder wake and the slat flow of a high lift configuration. Regions of effective production of fluctuation energy are identified, allowing conclusions about noise sources in the turbulent flow region.
