Abstract

The OSIRIS camera onboard the Rosetta spacecraft currently orbiting comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has yielded unprecedented views of a comet’s nucleus. We present here the first ever observations of meters - scale fractures on a surface of a comet, some forming polygonal networks. We present an initial assessment of their morphology, topology, and regional distribution. Our analysis shows that fractures are ubiquitous on the surface and show various morphologies and settings suggesting numerous formation mechanisms, which mainly encompass thermal fatigue, orbital - induced stresses, and possibly seasonal thermal contraction among other mechanisms. The presence of fractures on a cometary surface is of paramount significance to cometary science and could be a main driver in the surface evolution process, namely, through enhancement of mechanical erosion and localized activity.
