The CUBE CRP is dedicated to the generation of an experimental data base of the flow around a 3D cube for validation of advanced CFD simulation tools. Both the laminar and turbulent incoming boundary layer cases will be addressed using time resolved measurement techniques so that the CFD validation exercise can really serve industrial interests (e.g. future laminar wing detailed design). The measurements will be based on advanced 3D PIV and 4D PTV techniques recently developed in both research establishments. The new evaluation techniques will be part of a benchmark test and assessment procedure using synthetic data from DNS of a turbulent channel flow. The targeted experimental data base has to be as finely resolved as achievable with advanced metrological means. For this purpose, the experiment will be carried out in a water flow in the low speed water tunnel (called THBV) at ONERA Lille which allows for reduced flow dynamic characteristic frequencies with respect to air flow: full time resolution of the flow becomes possible. This tunnel has been designed with large optical accesses to perform flow visualisations and apply optical metrology techniques.
