Abstract

This paper presents a utter analysis for the supercritical CAST 10-2 airfoil and the laminar NACA 64-008 airfoil in a flow with free boundary layer transition based on CFD computations. For transition prediction the γ-Re_θ transition model is used. The results are compared to fully turbulent results obtained with the SST k-ѡ model. Unsteady RANS computations at Re = 2e6 are used to determine the aerodynamic derivatives, required to identify the utter boundary for a 2 degree-of-freedom model. At the limits of the laminar drag bucket a decrease in utter stability can be found for both airfoils and the given structural model. However, the limits of the laminar bucket are strongly in uenced by the prescribed turbulence boundary conditions. In addition, an aerodynamic resonance and the possibility of a 1 degree-of-freedom flutter is found for the CAST 10-2 airfoil
