Abstract

This contribution introduces the new cooperation of experts from aerodynamics, noise source modeling, aircraft design, and system noise prediction within the SFB 880. The overall goal of this new cooperation is to investigate and evaluate the system noise of the strongly varying vehicle variants under consideration in the SFB consortium. It is an essential simulation capability to be able to directly compare the specific noise generation and flight performance of each individual vehicle concept. Only then is it possible to identify the most promising vehicle concept out of the available solution space, e.g. a vehicle with turbofan vs. turboprop engines, equipped with powered-lift vs. conventional high-lift system. These most promising concepts can then be selected for further and more detailed investigation, i.e. both via computational and experimental methods. The required simulation capabilities and expert tools required for this task are introduced. Some capabilities and their final integration into an overall simulation process are still under development. Yet, a manual and initial SFB related application towards the comparison of a turboprop and a turbofan vehicle can be presented. This initial application can be understood as a successful feasibility check of the planned simulation process. In the long-term, the new process will be made applicable to all vehicle concepts that are under investigation in the SFB 880. Therefore, new noise prediction capabilities will be developed in order to account specifically for SFB 880 technology, i.e. (1) Circulation Control devices, (2) advanced propeller engines, and (3) ultra-high-bypass ratio turbofan engines. Ultimately, the upgraded simulation process has to enable a direct and comparative assessment of the various SFB 880 vehicle concepts.
