Abstract

Fiber reinforced composites with ZrB2 matrix were prepared by reactive melt infiltration with a Zr based intermetallic compound. Different precursors were evaluated in order to manufacture fiber reinforced preforms which allow for a melt infiltration process. The sample preforms contained boron powder forming ZrB2 with the Zr2Cu during the melt infiltration. Depending on the precursors used the composition of the infiltrated sample varies in the amount of ZrC and ZrB2. Interactions of the fiber and the Zr2Cu melt was evaluated and the microstructure of the infiltrated samples was investigated by means of XRD and SEM.
