Abstract
We performed Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent mixed convection in a vertical plane channel. LES of turbulent mixed convection have been conducted with an open source finite volume method code using second order discretization in space, implicit time integration and the PISO method for the pressurevelocity coupling. The objective was to analyse the performace of this code and to advance it for reliable DNS and LES. Since the agreement of the LES results to data in the literature was poor, we performed additional DNS to identify possible errors source in the used algorithms and the discretization scheme. It turned out that applying an explicit Leapfrog time integration scheme together with a projection method for the velocitypressure coupling and a fourth order accurate discretization considerably improves the results of the DNS. Thus, in the future this combination will be also used for LES.
