Abstract

A new MATLAB-based program called TOP 2 was developed as an alternative tool for the Fortran program TOP (Thermal protection system Optimization Program) which was used up to now. Due to a new calculation algorithm, TOP 2 is able to furnish more stable results while calculating and optimizing one-dimensional thermal protection systems (TPS) in context of spacecraft preliminary design. This report describes the two different underlying algorithms of TOP and TOP 2 and compares their results by some selected examples within the framework of a reasonability analysis.
