The number and the use of sensors to monitor the infrastructure condition increases rapidly. This is a necessary premise for condition based maintenance but also arises new challenges. Instead of duplicate sensor equipment and information redundancy, sensors should be applied efficiently, measured data should be available cross-linked, and information should be used comprehensively to make decisions. This article describes the challenges as well as an approach and some examples of an efficient information processing chain stretching from the sensor up to the decision.
