Abstract

For the storage of thermal energy the enthalpy of reversible gas-solid reactions can be utilized. The application of thermochemical energy storage constitutes a promising concept to decouple energy supply and demand in concentrated solar power. In high-temperature applications such as solar towers metal oxides could be potentially used. As the equilibrium temperature of Mn2O3/Mn3O4 amounts to about 900°C in air, manganese oxide with the reaction 6 Mn2O3 + ∆HR ⇌ 4 Mn3O4 + O2 has been chosen as a practical storage material.
