Abstract

The development of mechanical and electronic microwave imaging systems with high frame rates will now be pursued for over 15 years, and there exist several different technically challenging imaging techniques with impressive frame rates. However, imaging microwave radiometer systems do not have the use like infrared cameras. This is not related to the information content of the radiometric images, but only on the compactness of the device, coupled with the frame rate, the spatial resolution, the field of view and of course the cost. In this work it is shown that a new fully electronic microwave imaging system can be realized with a combination of the method of aperture synthesis and the directional beam steering by frequency shift, based on a slotted-waveguide antenna. This makes it possible to implement a cost-effective imaging system, which has a high frame rate, high angular resolution, a wide field of view and a compact system structure at once.
