GNSS for Ionosphere and Space Weather Research

Three GNSS based measurement techniques for ionospheric sounding have been discussed: Ground based measurements utilizing existing geodetic networks for computing TEC maps Space based measurements using limb sounding (radio occultation) and navigation data for deriving vertical electron density profiles and reconstructions of the 3 D electron density distribution of the topside ionosphere, respectively All three techniques complement each other in describing ionospheric features. They are well suited for a 3D reconstruction of the ionosphere / plasmasphere systems up to GNSS orbit heights in near real time There is an outstanding potential of multisatellite data analysis for ionospheric research and space weather monitoring
