Abstract

A Moving Bed Heat Exchanger for the generation of steam from solar heated granular materials is investigated with respect to flow behavior of the bulk and the thermal performance of the device. Two different tube bundle designs are investigated for this purpose. The tube bundle configuration is found to have a significant impact on the granular flow inside the device and thus on the heat transfer capabilities. The stagnant zone, developing on top of the heat exchanger tubes, limits the heat transfer in particular for high mass fluxes. An adapted tube arrangement, which takes into account the flow properties of the bulk, is found to increase the heat exchangers efficiency compared to a conventional configuration.
