Kurzfassung
Based on the customers' environmental awareness rising globally, nearly every aeronauti- cal institution came up with a road map for Air Transportation System (ATS) requirements considering a time horizon up until the year 2050. What all these documents have in com- mon is that they rarely take into account a historical view of the evolution of the ATS, the current situation of the system or a near term view of e.g. the world eet evolution based on the current trac growth predictions. Basically the requirements in these documents are set without accounting for the way of how to achieve them. Even though aircraft devel- opment follows an evolutionary trajectory there needs to be an incentive within the system to innovate. Instead of providing a global solution for the challenges mentioned, this paper intends to arouse interest for a more comprehensive view of the ATS, its stakeholders, sub- systems and interdependencies. After having a look at the system entities we will examine the current situation on the production site of air transport. Furthermore there will be an introduction to a world eet model and the world eet composition until 2030 from todays standpoint. The paper closes with a discussion about innovation in aeronautics and the elements needed to foster it.
