Abstract

At the German Aerospace Center (DLR e.V.) in the Microwaves and Radar Institute an efficient SAR-simulator called SAREF has been developed, mainly to perform parametric investigations of future space borne SAR systems. Recently, the concept has been revised and the functionality expanded to apply the simulator to typical tasks in the user ground segment. At first, this talk gives a brief introduction to the conceptual design of the SAR simulator and the diverse possibilities to perform measurements to verify the developed simulation techniques. Afterwards, selected examples will be given for the application of SAREF in end-to-end simulations for very high resolution SAR systems, in target signature analysis and recognition on space borne SAR image data, and in image acquisition planning for long-term monitoring or change detection.
