Abstract

The assessment of environmental state, detection and monitoring of changes in the environment has become an important issue for our society. Remote sensing using earth observation satellites contributes essentially to this area, since it is the only technology that allows continuous sampling in space and time. Since the mid 90's new sensors have been available allowing improved environmental monitoring as well as assessment of new state variables for biological oceanography. With the Modular Optoelectronic Scanner (MOS) the German Aerospace Centre DLR has operated an imaging spectrometer on board the IRS-P3 satellite since March 1996. The experiment was designed to provide data for the development of new algorithms to quantify biological and ecological parameters of coastal waters. The algorithms will be used operationally for the European environmental satellite ENVISAT.
