Abstract
DLR identified the following three cross-domain engineering problems: 1) Data exchange between different disciplines of a technical system, 2) Knowledge capturing and reuse across development stages and projects, and 3) Need for shorter design cycles versus recurrent systems analyses caused by design changes. The establishment of an integrated product model is the key for solving the problems above. This model-based approach enables central storage and reuse of product data and knowledge. It allows generating simulations automatically to speed up recurrent systems analyses with respect to e.g. trade-off, state monitoring, or safety assessment. This, in turn, enables efficient collaborative engineering approaches like concurrent design. DLR inaugurated its modern Concurrent Engineering Facility (CEF) in 2009. An integrated product model has been developed to solve the problems mentioned above considering existent standards from different domains like ISO 10303, AUTOSAR and ECSS. The model has been implemented in a DLR design tool and it has been successfully applied in several concurrent design studies from aeronautics and space domains. After discussing typical engineering problems, benefits and lessons learned of applying the model-based concurrent design approach are presented. An overview of the underlying integrated product model is given, which is envisaged to serve as draft for further standardization activities.
