Abstract
The lecture discusses Large Scale Travelling Ionospheric Disturbances (LSTID) generated during space weather events over Europe. The presented results are based on an analysis using total electron content (TEC) data obtained via the GNSS receiver network in Europe. We compare characteristic parameters, such as velocity, wavelength and direction with LSTIDs results from other regions of the world. Since recent studies indicate a strong correlation between the auroral electrojet (AE) and the maximum amplitude of observed LSTIDs, we discuss the dynamics of underlying physical processes. Finally an outlook about possible implications of the AE – LSTID correlation for the development of early warning algorithms is given.
