Abstract
The results of trace gas retrievals of limb sounding measurements will be affected by a horizontally inhomogeneous atmosphere. In this case, the horizontal gradients should be included in the modelling of the atmosphere. As the information content of gradients in the measurements is generally low, a regularized retrieval approach with carefully selected parameters should be used.
