Raman spectroscopy of Martian meteorites for future planetary exploration

Abstract

Since years Raman spectroscopy is a very important measuring method in earth science and it becomes more and more important also for planetary exploration. In terms of ExoMars a Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) onboard will perform measurements to identify minerals, mineral products, and organic compounds. In preparation for the data from Mars we investigate Martian meteorites, as well as Martian analogue material, and Mars relevant minerals. Raman spectra under ambient Earth conditions are identified from practically all known minerals. However, it is of relevance to determine spectra as a function of temperature and pressure, because analyses carried out under conditions different from normal environmental terms on Earth might influence the Raman spectra. Here the results of different measurement conditions on the Martian meteorite Dar al Gani 670 (DAG670) are presented.
