Abstract

This report outlines restraints for wake evasion in terms of navigational and operational restraints as well as passenger comfort issues. Recommendations are given concerning how to deal with such restraints. Namely, it is recommended to cover the navigational restraints by utilising the required and estimated navigation accuracy in order to define a lateral evasion corridor in which lateral evasive manoeuvres can be carried out. Passenger comfort issues can be covered by reducing the possible manoeuvrability of the aircraft and only to access the full manoeuvrability in case that a possibily hazardous encounter could not be prevented elsewise. The second part of the report introduces different approaches for the generation of evasion trajectories, namely the velocity obstacle method, the potential field method, and a method based on so-called motion primitives. Possible benefits of each approach are outlined and discussed as well as special issues concerning the adaptation of each method for operations of fixed-wing aircraft.
