Kurzfassung
For the optimization of modern high-speed trains it is essential to fully understand the physics of the instantaneous and time-averaged flow around the train body. Hence for the study presented here large eddy simulations (LES) have been performed to investigate the flow around a simplified train model. For subgrid-scale modelling the Smagorinsky model in combination with van Driest damping were used. Simulations were conducted for a Reynolds number of 2 x 10^5, based on the free stream velocity and the train width. It is shown that the LES technique is capable of providing details of the instantaneous flow field which can not be predicted in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations.
