Abstract
Increasing globalisation and worldwide mobility means that the overall “traffic” system is becoming ever more complex. In particular the requirements in the railways and rail vehicles sector continue to increase, for example, in Europe through the need for interoperability where there may be very different requirements due to the limitations of the existing rail network and in Asia through ever increasing operating speeds. In addition, in South and North America there are efforts to build up long-distance passenger travel (again).
