Abstract

Due to the high demand of as well more reliable as everywhere accessible and high data rate communication in all sectors of daily life, the shipping sector also faces new challenges to deal with. Not only the private and commercial segments in shipping are looking for integrated solutions for a continuous and worldwide data exchange of operational ship information. First of all an overall amelioration of situation awareness is envisioned. The governmental and regulatory bodies demand permanent track of the worldwide traffic, too. This paper tries to picture a holistic terrestrial communications concept for the maritime sector on the basis of the experience from aeronautical demands for which future aeronautical communications concepts are been developed.
