Abstract

The stagnation-point heat flux on spheres in the High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel Göttingen (HEG) in the German Aerospace Center (DLR) provides information on the total enthalpy of the gas in the reservoir. An easy and fast way for prediction of the measured stagnation-point heat flux is desired. Due to temperatures in the reservoir up to 10 000K at high enthalpy conditions, the gas molecules do not have enough time to recombine while passing the nozzle. Known theoretical correlations do not consider already dissociated free stream in chemical non-equilibrium, so that useful results are not possible. This thesis presents an efficient method for the determination of the stagnation-point heat flux in hypersonic high temperature flows on spheres using user friendly numerical simulation tools, that predicts the heat flux better than theoretical correlations used so far.
