Abstract

This document describes the future operational system scenario and operational requirements for the SUM project as requested in annex A of the SUM project proposal: Proposal database template, document EDA A0444RTGC JIP-FP, section A4-deliverables. The goal of the SUM project is to design and build a demonstrator of a low-cost multi-sensor vehicle protection system using a data fusion engine in order to enhance situational awareness and aid command and control for a moving vehicle in urban environment, as well as protect critical static points such as road blocks or outposts. The SUM project entails the utilisation of a light armoured vehicle participating in surveillance tasks in urban operations (the SUM vehicle). The SUM vehicle will be equipped with four kinds of sensors: a visual camera, a thermal infrared camera, a microwave imaging radiometer and a microwave radar, along with the material (computers) necessary to do the processing of the data acquired by the sensors or by other means (auxiliary data). Along with the ground information provided by the sensors’ data, aerial information coming from a UAV and from a satellite will be processed by a data fusion engine. The data fusion engine will provide pertinent information about the threats found in the surveyed area. The system to be developed is intended to gather the data from the sensors and from certain external sources (UAV, satellite and other sources of auxiliary data), process them and show the results through a Man-Machine Interface (MMI). The MMI will allow interactions between the end-users and relevant parts of the system. The SUM project doesn’t include the following activities • the management of the mission in which the SUM vehicle is involved; • the management of the communications between the SUM vehicle and other vehicles being part of the convoy or with an operational centre.
