In the context of CSP, cheap thermal storages promise low levelized electricity costs. Sand has been proposed as a high-temperature thermal storage material. The paper summarizes research activities that analyze thermo-mechanical and dynamic properties of various particulate materials with respect to their usability for a concept that uses an innovative air / sand heat exchanger. Thermomechanical stress analysis of a heat exchanger frame design is also presented.
