Abstract

The planned Sentinel-1 and Sentinnel-2 missions will generate enormous amounts of image data. While Sentinel-1 will deliver SAR data, Sentinel-2 will provide multispectral optical images. Due to the large amount of data that cannot be analyzed manually, users of both missions are very much interested in automated techniques that would allow a routine monitoring of surface changes that may be either gradual or event-driven. Typical examples are the temporal evolution of ice sheets being visible in SAR images, vegetation phases and annual cycles to be derived from multispectral optical images, or unexpected disasters, where one needs a rapping mapping of floods or burn scars seen by any Sentinel sensor.
