Abstract
This paper reviews investigations by the authors on thermophysical properties and solidification behaviour of liquid metals. Containerless processing techniques, such as electromagnetic levitation as well as adiabatic aerogel furnaces have been used to study properties of the equilibrium and undercooled melt as well as near and non equilibrium solidification processes. To a great extent, the microgravity environment was essential in obtaining the results presented here.
