The knowledge of the mechanisms of heat transfer and advanced cooling techniques is the key for mastering the designing of reliable and efficient combustion chambers. Within the framework of the multi-national and EU-funded project “Aerodynamic and Thermal Load Interactions with Lightweight Advanced Materials for High Speed Flight”, short ATLLAS, a single element combustion chamber for gaseous oxygen and kerosene has been developed and characterized. This setup is used for the conduction of a variety of experiments dealing with different aspects of cooling techniques such as film and transpiration cooling and also serves as platform for tests with newly developed ceramic matrix composite materials. This paper illustrates the design and hardware characteristics of the CMC samples investigated. Furthermore, the findings from accompanying numerical studies, which are based on models and tools known from common literature, as well as the first results of cold flow and hot fire experiments, are presented.
