Snow on the panels reduces the yield generated by photovoltaic (PV) systems. In order to optimize yield estimates, detailed information about snow cover periods is vital. Snow cover maps based on satellite data provide this information for simulating, planning and improving profit estimates. The advantage thereby is that satellite-based data is spatially comprehensive, instead of being interpolated, as is the case with ground measurement data. The maps based on satellite datasets are validated with land-based maps of the German Weather Service (DWD). In this paper, snow cover maps from Germany, Europe, and the USA are presented with a focus on the needs of the solar industry.
