Abstract

In this work the problem of frame synchronization is tackled from the standpoint of optimal detection theory for a multitude of scenarios. For continuous data transmission the optimal synchronizers for differential detection, flat fading channels and coded data are derived. Where too complex, the synchronizers are approximated by closetooptimal and technically realizable ones. The performance of the synchronizers was analysed by simulation and analysis (for binary phase shift keying over a Gaussian channel) and it was shown that using the primitive correlation rule and neglecting channel state and coding information yields markedly inferior correct synchronization rates. For preambleless packet data transmission the importance of powerful frame synchronization is even more pronounced due to the one shot nature of acquisition. Here, the new synchronizers result in significant increases in possible data throughput through reduction of the pertinent sync word lengths. Simulations are confirmed by analysis, the latter allowing the design of new and more efficient sync words for use in packet transmission.
