Abstract

The paper presents key issues in materials processing, explains the role of gravity induced effects and discuss the important contributions, experiments under reduced gravity conditions have made in the last three decades. A few examples of solidification processing and the measurement of thermophysical properties of molten metals are presented. The paper closes with an outlook to materials science on the ISS and the future of materials research with sounding rockets.
