Abstract

Aerodynamic contrail formation involves saturation ratios of the order 10, exhaust contrail formation can involve saturation ratios of 2.5 to 3, and the normal homogeneous freezing of aqueous solution droplets in the upper troposphere at least involves saturation ratios exceeding 1.45. Crystal growth under such conditions may behave different from normal textbook knowledge which generally assumes low supersaturation. Ice particles may get an unordered structure, with high surface energy such that the equilibrium saturation pressure over such an ice particle is higher than that for normal ice. New laboratory and wind channel measurements of ice growth at high supersaturation are recommended.
