Abstract

The concept of trace NO detection using resonant anti Stokes Raman scattering at the NO A-X 226 nm UV resonance and NO fluorescence in a detector cell has been proposed and cells associated with this concept have been characterized. It was found that using a honeycomb structure in a 2 cm long test NO cell, imaging could be achieved, although the resolution of the cell was limited by the honeycomb cell size (around 1.78 mm in this case). Issues related to the absorption, quenching, resolution, and obtainable detection ratios for honeycomb structures have been addressed. It is proposed that for maximum sensitivity, a longer detection cell (one meter or so) will be required.
