Regional products for the Baltic Sea in the frame of MARCOAST GMES

Abstract

The DLR participates in the ESA MARCOAST GSE project with services for regional Baltic Sea products. In the frame of the national MAPP project (MERIS Applications and regional Products Project) funded by the national Ministry for Education and Research, there was developed a suite of algorithms computing environmentally relevant parameters for the Baltic Sea with special respect to its specific optical properties. The presentation will give an introduction into the products and services provided by DLR in cooperation with other partners. Daily maps of the water constituents chlorophyll, sediment and gelbstoff are provided for the Baltic Sea. For this an interpretation algorithm basing on MERIS water leaving reflectances was developed using a model based inversion technique with information theory background, principal component analysis. It takes into account specific optical properties of the Baltic Sea water constituents. From the daily processed products are additionally computed weekly and monthly mean maps. Basing on the concentrations additional products are derived, water transparency and an algae bloom risk indicator. All products are provided in a uniformly mapped geo-projection grid. The algorithmic computation is part of a complex processing system developed in the frame of the MAPP project by the company Brockmann Consult. The interpretation methodology and processing chain will be introduced in the presentation, together with the discussion of the used specific Baltic Sea models and illustrated on a number of examples
