Abstract

In DLR technical assistance to CNES on HERMES, the influence of flow radiality on the aerodynamic of HERMES 1.0 was studied as part of 1992 work on local bridging methods. This aims at a better assessment of wind tunnel experiments which often suffer from non-parallel test section flow due to nozzle boundary layer effects. Especially pitching moment characteristics are strongly dependant on radiality, as will be demonstrated for typical experiment conditions used in the CNRS SR 3 wind tunnel for HERMES 1.0 measurements. Comparison between these experimental data and bridging calculations leads to the conclusion that at least part of the discrepancies between available measurements for various configurations and calculation results can be explained by radiality effects in the wind tunnel.
