Abstract

Experiments were carried out on water jets with an initial velocity perturbation emerging from nozzles with radii R a between 1.5 to 2.5 mm. The mean velocity U was 2.0 to 4.3 m/s. The Weber numbers (We &#61 rho RaU/sigma; rho density; sigma surface tension) were between 140 and 400. A special distortion mechanism produced velocity modulations which were close to being sinusoidal while theiramplitudes were of the order of the mean velocity. The decomposing jets which on first sight seem to have a chaotic structure show a very periodic behavior if stroboscopic visualization is used. Photographic pictures of the jets were compated with the authors kinematic wave therory which neglects the surface tension.
