A Feasibility Study of e Transition Prediction in Navier-Stokes Methods for Two Dimensional Airfoil Computations

Applying Navier-Stokes methods in the design procedure for laminar airfoils the prediction of the transition location still represents an unresolved problem. Accepting the e*-method to represent a convenient transition prediction tool, the requirements for coupling e* to Navier-Stokes methods will be demonstrated. For the validation of the necessary steps in the coupling procedure the laminar airfoil DoAL3 is chosen, which was measured in the transonic facility TWB at the DLR in Braunschweig. The limiting N-factor for that wind tunnel is determined beforehand.
