Abstract
Since 1986 West Germany has conducted studies to provide an airborne telescope of 2.5 m aperture for SOFIA. SOFIA is a readily deployable observation platform at heights above 12.5 km for sophisticated instrumentation from the sub-mm well into the optical spectral range. New technologies have been proposed and will have to be made available in the areas of light weight mirror fabrication, large spherical bearings and structural design.
