Abstract

The potential of satellite repeat-passSAR interferometry for mapping and monitoring of different natural surfaces is discussed here. The presented approaches are based on analysis of the interferometric coherence using SIR-C/X-SAR and ERS-1/ERS-2 tandem data from the Mt. Etna test site in Sicily, Italy. The evaluation of the frequency dependent coherence of several volcanic terrain types is used as a first order approach for classification. Parallel a second classification algorithm based on the temporal decorrelation behavior of different surfaces in only one frequency is addressed. The results of the algorithms are compared and discussed.
