Abstract

The real nonnegative eigenvalues of the covariance matrix allow the introduction of a target randomness parameter. This polariyation basis independent parameter is a measure of the distance between the random target and the dominant deterministic target in a least square sense (the leading term of Cloude's target decomposition). The usefulness of this parameter is illustrated with polarimetric DLR weather radar measurements. Representative range-height data plots of a stratiform and a convective precipitation event are presented.
