Abstract

A CW-CO2 Laser was used for surface alloying of Fe base materials with chromium boride particles. Chromium diboride and chromium monoboride powders were used for laser surface alloying of AISI 1045 steel, by the powder injection method. They were partially dissolved in the bath, forming a melted layer of Fe-Cr-B-C with different chrome and boron contents in the melt. The solidification resulted in the formation of iron borides, chromium carbides, gamma-austenite and undissolved particles, in both cases.
