Abstract

A CW-CO2 laser was used for alloying the surface of AISI 1045 steel with CrB2 by the powder injection method. CrB2 particles were partially dissolved in the bath, forming a melted layer of Fe-Cr-C-B. Solidification produced iron borides, chromium carbides, martensite and some austenite. Hardness was uniformly high, very good abrasion resistan ce was found, but the structure and the properties of the substrate had been left unaffected.
