Abstract

The paper analyses two principial approaches for the transportation system to support the operational phase of an SPS scenario that foresees the continued installation of two 10 GW stations p.a. equivalent to 150,000 Mg payload p.a. One concept consists of conventional SSTO vehicles, the structure of which is left in orbit and used to build-up the structure of SPS. As an alternative concept an externally supplied vehicle is being considered, the required power is being supplied by laser from groundA comparison of these two approaches showed, that the conventional launch system is preferable, because it is technically feasible and simpler in development, and no significant impact to atmosphere can be seen.
